Tähän tämä syyskuun taidehaaste sitten päättyy. Huhhuh, olihan kuukausi! Nyt on sitten hyvä aika jakaa ne muutamat huomiot ja vinkit, jotka itse koin tärkeiksi prosessin aikana. Korostan että en opeta miten piirretään kasvot, vaan lähinnä miten työn saa alulle. 🙂
Aloita!
Tärkeintä on rohjeta aloittaa. Jokainen aloittaa jostain, eikä kehitystä tapahdu jos ei edes yritä.
Jatka.
Jatka piirtämistä, vaikkei henkilö heti näyttäisikään täysin siltä kuin pitäisi. Matka luonnoksesta valmiiksi piirrokseksi on pitkä ja siinä välillä voi tapahtua mitä vain. Kasvot muodostuu pikkuhiljaa varjostamalla, joten on vain luonnollista etteivät ne alussa näytä juuri miltään.

Käytä välineitä, jotka sinulta jo löytyy.
Yksinkertaisimmillaan tarvitset vain paperia, lyijykynän, pyyhekumin ja teroittimen. Myöhemmin voit panostaa hankkimalla parempaa paperia ja piirrustuskyniä eri lyijyn kovuuksilla. Värien blendaamiseen voi käyttää sormia, talouspaperia ja vanupuikkoja. Tosin, jos käytät blendaamiseen sormia, niin älä käytä enää talouspaperia. Se tuo kaikki paperille painetut sormenjäljet esille. 😀 Terätön puuväri ja mustunut pyyhekumi ovat myös hyviä välineitä blendaamiseen ja tekstuurien luomiseen.
Valitse hyvä referenssikuva.
Valitse tarpeeksi isoja ja selkeitä valokuvia, jotta yksityiskohdatkin näkyvät. Itse koitin valita kuvat niin, että idolin kasvot ja eritoten ne hänelle ominaisimmat piirteet erottuivat selvästi. Selfieitä käytin todella todella harkitusti, koska niissä on vääristymisen ongelma (=kuvakulma tekee sen).
Älä pakota.
On turhauttavaa heittää töitä roskiin, mutta jos jälki ei miellytä pitkänkään työstämisen jälkeen, niin ei ole mitään järkeä jatkaa. Sitä paitsi seuraavalla kerralla sama piirros on jo helpompi piirtää, kun tietää mitä pitäisi tehdä.

Week 4 of Kpop Art Challenge: What did I learn?
This is where my September Art Challenge ends. Pheeew, what a month! Let me share what I’ve learnt about the process of portrait drawing. Just for your information I’m not going to teach you how to draw a face, rather tell how to get started.
Start!
Just be brave and start drawing! Everyone begins as an amateur and improvement can’t happen without practice.
Keep on going.
Don’t ditch your work even if it doesn’t immediately look how it should. There’s a long way between a doodle and the finished piece. The face forms in time when you add shadows in their places. There’s a chance that it turns out well after all!
Watch/read tutorials.
Internet is full of them. I watched some tutorials on YouTube about drawing faces and these were the most useful ones for me: https://youtu.be/y-hFyom8P1U and https://youtu.be/J06Mh4ir6tA
Use art supplies that you already have.
All you need are paper, pencil, eraser and sharpener. Later you can invest in better paper and drawing pencils with different hardness. For blending you can use your fingers, tissue paper and Q-tips. Just know that if you use your fingers for smudging first don’t use tissue paper later! It just reveals your finger prints on the paper. 😀 I also found a nibless color pencil and dirty eraser helpful when blending and creating textures.
Choose your reference pictures well.
Try finding as big and clear images as you can so that you don’t have to guess with smaller details. I preferred photos which showed the idol’s face and significant features properly and avoided using selfies because they distort proportions. I strayed from that principal once I was more comfortable with drawing portraits.
Be ready to let go.
Sometimes it happens that even after hours the artwork doesn’t look like you imagined. It’s frustrating start drawing same thing all over again but it’s worth it if you’re not happy with the result. Next time it’s easier to draw anyway!
